Web 2.0rigami

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

After creating my Twitter bird logo in an origami style a week ago, I wondered what other icons would look good all origamized.  Turns out a few of the web 2.0 apps/sites look great, so I decided to create a little collection for everyone to use as they see fit.  I suppose you could look at these with the view that web 2.0 companies can be extremely beautiful objects, yet are still very fragile and can be crushed instantly.

You can download the set of 15 below, which includes the origami icons in a variety of sizes in transparent pngs, and the PSD and EPS files.

Let me know what you think of them, and feel free to suggest any other ones to include.  I had a bit of fun with IE for all you web designers out there ;)

20 signs you Twitter too much

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Just discovered a list of 20 signs you twitter too much over at thembtiblog.com.

I ticked off about 8 of them :o

I especially liked number 15: “You decide not to argue a point with someone because it will take more than 140 characters to respond.”

I discovered afterwards though that it’s now been bumped up to 50 signs because of the number of emails Breanne got after she posted the first 20!

To be honest, I’m afraid to check out the 50.  Right, back to work Paddy!

Twitterigami

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

After reading Lee Munroe’s post about creative Twitter backgrounds I discovered a list of 20+ Twitter Bird designs.  It seems to be fastly becoming the latest craze to create your own Twitter bird for your blog.  And I’m all about crazes!  Here’s what I came up with.

I really wanted something a bit different and obscure than the traditional ‘cartoony style’ bird so I went for an origami one.  Any thoughts/opinions on it are welcome.  I had a look at some origami birds and then designed my own over the top of the original Twitter logo, using the same colours to make it a bit more recognisable to twitter addicts.

I kinda like the fact that only people who are really familiar with and love Twitter for the right reasons should be able to recognise it.  Twitter has crossed a line recently with Britney Spears creating an account.  Don’t get me started on that.

Anyway, feel free to use the files below on your blog/site if you like it :)  Im a true believer in the open source life so just shoot me an email if you use them. :)  Also you can find me on Twitter at paddydonnelly.

Transparent Gif versions below.

Cheers!

Blessed are the Twitterers, for they shall inherit the Internet

My Tiny Jesus…

Jesus preaching the random word of Twitter.  Kinda cute speech bubbles, and a little hypnotising.

Tokyo Tuesday

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Wanna know what Japan is up to?  Tokyo Tuesday is the place to be!

“Let’s jump right into this: Japan has the absolute best census in the history of my known world. Not only does it include normal things like age, sex, and the height of each of your pets, but it also legitimizes the gossipy question of What Are You Doing Right Now? Japan slapped a bunch of people with notebooks and a sacred Numbers Mission: keep a log of what you do during the day, in fifteen minute intervals. And those people did!”

This visualization project is the work of Soma, from Brooklyn, and looks at the everyday life of the Japanese people.  Do you want to find out just how many women with part-time jobs are walking their dog at 3am?  This project will tell you with the help of some lovely colourful graphic timelines.  The design is perfect, really simple and, even though it’s difficult to figure out exactly whats going on from first visiting the site, you are drawn into the project and persevere to find out the intricacies of this project.

Its projects like this this which encourage me to kick start my own vis projects, while giving me bucketloads of inspiration at the same time.  Another different approach to visualization is Toby Ng’s World of 100 project, one of the simplest vis projects I have come across so far.  A series of posters which shows various statistics based on the premise that if the world were a village of 100 people.  The posters have a variety of images which are split in some way to show the different statistics.

I must admit that I did chuckle when I saw the image for the sexual orientation poster.

Some striking images and so well excecuted.  I have now got a range of ideas for my visualization project.  I had originally planned on pursuing a more computer/coding based project but the World of 100 project has shown me that it could be much much simpler and still have a dramatic effect using my Illustration skills.  It is often the case that I over complicate things so the inspiration from this project should make me think clearer.

A couple of other Visualization sites which inspire me include Infosthetics [Above], which explores the symbiotic relationship between creative design and the field of information visualization, and TweetStats [Below], which shows you just how addicted you are to Twitter.  I’m getting there but not quite on Stephen Fry’s level yet :)
