How do you Twitter: Daily Blonde?

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

Every day for the next week or so I will be interviewing a variety of marketers, advertisers, bloggers, SEO consultants, businesses, artists and Internet gurus on the latest micro blogging sensation to hit the interwebs, Twitter.

Today we get to hear the thoughts of TheDailyBlonde, the Blogger, Writer, Commentator on Bullcrap, Funny Girl, Single Mom to 5 Awesome Kiddos, Left Handed Polish Blonde who’s NEVER Growing Up!

Will we still be tweeting in 5 years time?

Hard to tell…I’ll be 50 then. Will I still have my eyesight? That’s to be determined! I hope to Tweet for a long time!

Do you prefer the instant feedback and speed of twitter over blogging

No. I think they are both quite different. I’m a blog-aholic, it’s the writing that I love. Twittering is my social candy.

Are you frustrated or encouraged by the 140 character limit?

No. It’s keeps me in line.

What’s your thoughts on people who protect their updates?

Boo. Hiss. Protection is for those who don’t want to catch a disease. If you don’t want to be social or participate in social media, then just do something else.

How do you decide who to follow?

I try to follow everyone who follows me. I do read their “bio” though…I determine if they are a spammer or a real person. Not too hard to tell! I also don’t follow people who follow thousands and have no updates. It’s just plain strange. Everyone I follow is someone I want to exchange tweets with.

When people ask you ‘Where were you when Obama was elected’, will your answer be ‘On Twitter’?

Absolutely. I was on Twitter and giving a play by play on election results.

Are we losing our social skills because of the increase in social media tools?

No. We’re learning to communicate better…or at least I hope.

Who would you recommend following?

Well, if you need a dose of reality, follow me. Just don’t follow too closely. Mr. Handsome is the only one I allow that close. Seriously….hmmm…@Paddydonnelly@carissarogers, @fashiongrail, @avegagray, @sweetnote….oh my. There are so many. I love all of my followers. Just look at my list…great people!!!!

Do you remember what blogging was like before twitter?

Of course…I got a heck of a lot more of it done!!

Anything else to say about Twitter?

Yes, here’s what I have to say about Twitter: The only thing you haven’t ruined is my love life. Twitter has made me order pizza for the kids on nights I was to make a huge dinner. Twitter has kept me up way past my bedtime. Twitter has slowed me down in the areas of blogging, reading blogs and doing freelance writing. Basically, I should get paid by Twitter to be a full time entertainer because it consumes me. No idea why. It’s like falling in love with the guy you thought was just your friend. Hey…that happened to me.

Thanks!

It was great talking to you Cheryl!  Updates from The Daily Blonde are always entertaining so I would recommend you follow her for ‘a dose of reality’ and have a look at her blog. TheDailyBlonde also organises Twitter projects such as #oneword.  Check her out!

Check back tomorrow when I will be talking to Internet marketing consultant Andy Beal.

How do you Twitter: Chris Coyier?

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Every day for the next week or so I will be interviewing a variety of marketers, advertisers, bloggers, SEO consultants, businesses, artists and Internet gurus on the latest micro blogging sensation to hit the interwebs, Twitter.

Chris Coyier, web design guru and founder of CSS-Tricks, a fantastic resource for all web designers, shares his thoughts on using Twitter.

Will we still be tweeting in 5 years time?

No. I’ll bet you a dollar =)

At present it’s still largely us web enthusiasts (geeks) who are using Twitter. It is changing and moving into the mainstream though with people like Britney starting to use it. How do you think it would change if everybody, even your Granny, was on Twitter?  Will it still be ‘cool’ to be on Twitter or will we look for the next toy?

The more the merrier I say. I don’t care if Britney uses it. I don’t have to follow her and she doesn’t have to follow me. And anyone I’d be interested in following isn’t chatting with her either.

What does it say about a person when they protect their updates?

I’m cool with people who want to be private. I can see how someone might want to tweet about where they are and what they are doing and not want anybody in the world to see that.

What was your first tweet? 10 extra points if it was ‘Checking out Twitter’ :) myfirsttweet.com

“Snowed in. Video games.”  — Could just as easily be my most recent tweet =)

You obviously don’t follow everyone who follows you. How do you decide who is worthy?

I have a soft cap of about 300 people to follow. Even that is too many most days. If I know someone in real life or they are good friends outside of Twitter, that’s an automatic in. Otherwise it’s solely based on if I think you tweet interesting things, which I can see from your Twitter homepage. It does make me feel guilty in a weird way sometimes, having 10x more followers than people I follow, but there is nothing I can do about that while still keeping Twitter useful for me.

When people ask you ‘Where were you when Obama was elected?’ will your answer be ‘On Twitter’?

Totally.

Are we losing our ‘real life’ social skills because of the increase in social media tools?

Social media tools don’t hurt your social skills. Spending all hours of the day alone in front of a computer hurt your social skills.

Any advice for a web designer using Twitter?

Sure: follow other designers. Talk about design on Twitter. Share sites you think are well designed. Ask questions, answer questions.

Thanks!

Thanks Chris!  If you’re at all interested in web design then you should be following Chris Coyier and also checking out CSS-Tricks for some great tips on all things CSS, PHP, HTML and other web design goodies.

Tomorrow’s interview will be with blogger and self confessed Twitterholic, The Daily Blonde.
