Last Week In Ireland

I leave for Belgium to start a new life as a strategic designer on Monday 26th January, so this coming week will be my last in Ireland for a while.

I’ll be going from this…

ireland

To this…

belgium

I need some suggestions for things to do in my last week to make sure I make the most of it.  Obviously I will be drinking copious amounts of proper Guinness, climbing the mountain in the picture and probably having more than my fair share of Irish Stew.

Any other ideas?

  1. Watch the Late Late Show so that, when you’re watching television in Belgium you can say “even the Late Late was better than this.”

  2. Paddy go surfing this weekend in Portrush. It is going to be insane. 14ft offshor winds, a good time to shred.

Just go west. Whenever I feel the needs to get a hit of full on Ireland, I go west. You’ll knock the “Proper Guinness” on the head there too. The further west, the better the Black stuff.

Mountain? Bit of an overstatement don’t you think?

@Tomas Ha, Yeah I know, we call it ‘the mountain’ a bit sarcastically. We usually climb it to get rid of hangovers from the Guinness :)

Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming!

I’m Belgian and I stayed in Ireland as an exchange student a few years ago, so that puts me in a good position:
GO TO THE PUB as much as you can! That’s the one thing I remember the most: everybody was always in the pub, drinking :-))
People here don’t go the pub that often (more to parties, festivals, …) and certainly not during weekdays. God forbid!

    Hey man.

I got here from Anto’s blog. My first reaction is… nice design!

My second thought is… HOLY BATMAN! Belgium is a huge change from Ireland. I think I’ll stay in Scotland for a l-o-n-g time.

    Anyhoo, nice blog.

@Mies: I wonder what pubs you go to, but the ones in Ghent are mostly completely filled during the weekends and on weekdays they don’t do it bad either.

@paddy: There are a lot of pubs in Belgium serving Guinness and there are a few Irish pubs here as well. But be sure to try Belgian beer as well ;). For your last days I would say to go spend as much time as possible with friends.

    Thanks everyone!

@Mies - I will indeed be enjoying the pubs before I go, too much probably!

@Stephen - Wow, what a kind offer, I doubt I will make it down to Gortin before I go but thanks!

@Dimitri - Ha, yeah I have sampled quite a few of the belgian beers on my many trips over so far. Trust me, I will try and sample them all in my time there! And there’s an Irish pub jut down the road from me if I get homesick :)

  13. Wow, quite the change! Hopefully not your last forevery though! I’d go into the tourist shops and buy as many “Kiss me, I’m Irish” type tshirts and hats as you can. You’ll never really leave Ireland behind. :D
